Walks - Challenging

Status:Active, open to new members
Group leader:
Group email: Walks - Challenging group
When: Monthly on Thursday mornings
Last Thursday
Venue: Variable

The Challenging Walks Group meets on the LAST Thursday of each month for walk between 8-10 miles.

The Challenging Walks group was created in January 2017 in response to some walkers wanting to do longer distances than the Long Walks group walks, and a desire for some to walk The National Forest Way.

Currently, we are doing circular walks of up to 10 miles each month but may resume linear walks later.

We sometimes meet to arrange carpools, either at the Newton Road car park between the Trent Bridge and The Sump (park in the main car park where there are toilets available), or at the Rolleston Club car park (at the back near the bowls green). (links below)

CHALLENGING WALK 30/10/2025 The Winster Circular

Only 10.54km (6.6miles), but plenty of ascent 373m(1224') and descent 372m(1220'). About 3.5 hours of walking plus mini-stops

We meet at the junction of the B5057 and Oaker Road above Darley Bridge.

What Three Words ( tries.reception.caressed ) It's roadside parking on a wide road.

Allow an hour from Burton to arrive at 9.45 and be booted, ready to go at 10.00.

We are doing an anti-clockwise route that sees us walking on forest paths, an old Packhorse track, the small town of Winster, open fields with numerous squeeze gaps in the stone walls, a few stiles and a section of the Limestone Way.

We will see numerous grassed over spoil heaps and covered shaft tops from the lead mining era. Views of the Derwent Valley, Carsington Pastures wind turbines and occasional rocky outcrops.

Please bring a snack and drink for a couple of mini-stops on the route.

I will be ringing the Square and Compass in Darley Bridge to let them know how many of us there will be wanting a meal.

Since it's roadside parking, car sharing is strongly recommended.   If you need a lift, please meet at Rolleston Club, Burnside, Rolleston-on-Dove at 8.30am to arrange car sharing.

Please let Jane know if you are joining this walk, need a lift and if you want to have a meal.

Hoping for a fine day🤞

Rex
